Recovery in the City has its own operational rules. The whole Square Mile is one of the strictest enforcement zones in London - yellow lines, red routes, business-only loading bays, weekend closures, and the City of London Police's own enforcement layer in addition to TfL and the boroughs. Recovery vehicles are exempt from parking enforcement during a live recovery, but the loading window is short: typically 15 minutes from arrival to vehicle being on the trailer.
Most City breakdowns are commercial - courier vans, taxis, business commuter cars, occasional resident cars in EC1's Barbican / Smithfield residential pockets. Black cabs make up a surprisingly large share of our City callouts; the standard TX4/TX5 has its own breakdown patterns (water pumps, alternators, glow plugs) that our drivers know well. We have specific routing knowledge for the Barbican underground car park, the Cannon Street car parks, and the Liverpool Street commercial loading bays.
The road network is dense and one-way. London Wall (A1211), the A10 Bishopsgate corridor, the A11 Whitechapel High Street, and the A201 Farringdon Road are the main spinal routes. Side streets are mostly one-way with school-street and bus-gate restrictions in many places. A standard satnav routing won't account for these - but our dispatch software does, plus drivers' local knowledge from thousands of City jobs.
Tower Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge and London Bridge are the southern edges. Tower Bridge is closed to general traffic at peak hours and during bridge lifts (we get a TfL feed for live bridge-lift schedules). Blackfriars and London Bridge are the alternative routes. Recovery from inside the City to a south-of-river destination usually takes 25-35 minutes total including the bridge crossing and the destination drop-off.
Saturday and Sunday in the City are dramatically quieter than weekdays - most commercial vehicles are off the road, residents-only zones become free of enforcement, and our response times drop to 15-20 minutes for City call-outs. Weekend EC1/EC2 jobs are often Barbican residents with battery issues or weekend tourists who left lights on at one of the City's tourist-targeted hotels.
